Route Pura Vida
Beach scene at Nosara, Costa Rica

Nosara, Costa Rica

By Aaron Bailey · Last updated

Nosara is a wellness-focused beach community on the Nicoya Peninsula, known for world-class yoga retreats and consistent surf breaks. This Blue Zone destination offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, healthy living, and laid-back beach vibes.

Top attractions & tours

Playa Guiones is Nosara's main attraction: four kilometers of honey-colored sand with a mellow, forgiving wave that has made it arguably the best beginner-to-intermediate surf destination in Central America. Lessons and rentals run from dawn to dusk.

Nosara's yoga scene is the other pillar — the Bodhi Tree and Nosara Yoga Institute draw students and teachers from around the world, and even short-stay visitors can drop in on classes ranging from Vinyasa to aerial.

Just north, the Ostional Wildlife Refuge hosts arribadas — mass nestings of olive ridley turtles that draw up to 100,000 females ashore on the same nights. Community-guided night tours during arribada weeks (which cluster around new moons, especially August–November) are a bucket-list wildlife experience.

Local picks

La Luna on Playa Pelada is the sunset spot, perched on a rocky point above the sand. The Gilded Iguana is a classic surfer's hangout, Rosi's Soda Tica is the locals' lunch pick, and Beach Dog Café is the go-to morning smoothie bowl.

Burgers & Beers and Casa Tucán cover the casual end; Robin's Ice Cream is a tradition. For groceries and a slice of local life, the Wednesday market near the Guiones entrance brings in organic producers from across the peninsula.

Nosara splits into three small communities — the airport village (actual 'Nosara' town), Playa Pelada, and Playa Guiones — with most tourism in Guiones. Renting a bike and looping between all three at sunset is a Nosara rite of passage.

Weather & climate

Nosara sits in the heart of the Nicoya Blue Zone with a climate nearly identical to Tamarindo and Santa Teresa — hot, sunny, and reliably dry from December through April.

Daytime highs in the upper 80s to low 90s°F, with steady trade winds off the Pacific making the shade very comfortable. Nights settle into the low to mid 70s.

Green season brings heavy but usually short afternoon rain from May through November, peaking September–October. Mornings are generally clear, and the landscape turns wildly green.

Safety considerations

Nosara has a strong community feel and very low violent crime, but petty theft at beach trailheads and from parked cars is a real issue — never leave valuables visible. A $5 padlock on your rented ATV goes a long way.

The roads into and around Nosara are notoriously bumpy dirt — dust in dry season, washouts in the wet. Most incidents involving tourists are ATV accidents or rollovers; wear a helmet, slow for blind corners, and skip night rides.

Getting around

Nosara is spread across 10+ square kilometers of forested dirt roads, so unless you plan to stay put near your hotel, you'll need transportation. Golf carts, ATVs, and bikes are the local rentals; a 4WD car is the most flexible for day trips out to Ostional or Samara.

Uber does not operate in Nosara. A few reliable local taxi drivers handle the town — your hotel can give you a WhatsApp number. Flights into Nosara Airport (NOB) from San José are daily and take about 55 minutes; shared shuttles from Liberia run 2.5–3 hours.

When to visit

December through April is high season — best beach weather, most restaurants and yoga studios open, and highest prices. Book accommodations months in advance for Christmas and Easter.

The green season's May–July window offers excellent surf, rain that mostly holds off until afternoon, and a quieter yoga-retreat scene. Sea-turtle lovers should aim for arribada nights August through November, checking Ostional Refuge updates a week before traveling.
